After School Tutoring and Enrichment
CCI students work together on a Day of the Dead activity.
Literacy Corps Tutoring
At the CCI, tutoring is offered by trained tutors Monday–Thursday each day, for about 25 elementary school students each semester in grades 2-5. The CCI Literacy CorpsTutoring Program provides a proven small group literacy focus, with lesson plans that align to the Indiana State Standards. Students are exposed to good literature and exciting and appropriate writing opportunities while receiving the academic support that they need.
Students are paired with a volunteer tutor to receive assistance with reading and writing. Tutors typically work with the same student two days per week for the semester. This encourages tutors to appreciate and support the particular learning styles and educational needs presented by the child, and gives each child the consistent presence of a mentor they see regularly.
Arts and Culture Enrichment
Because of the unique environment of the CCI, art-related Enrichment Activities are offered to the children after the tutoring program, Monday–Thursday. Activities are structured and focus on the child’s personal development in following areas:
Monday and Thursday: Art Activities
Students will engage in hands-on arts projects, explore the on-site Crossroads Gallery, and participate in developing an ofrenda for our Day of the Dead Celebration. Programming receives support from the Indiana Arts Commission.
Tuesday: Take Ten
TAKE TEN is simple: it is a short positive phrase that provides children with a common language to demonstrate their choice for nonviolence. TAKE TEN is more than a slogan—it encourages children to TALK IT OUT, WALK IT OUT, WAIT IT OUT rather than engage in violent behavior. Participants will work with college volunteers and use art, writing, and drama to learn how they can reduce violence.
Wednesday: Drama Club
Students will love learning drama in this innovative acting program. Students will learn theatre games and ensemble building activities. They will also do creative movement activities that teach the fundamentals of acting through voice, imagination, and movement. Through collaboration, students will use their imagination to build their own world to help their characters achieve their goals.
Jump Rope Club: The ND Jump Rope Club comes every Tuesday throughout the academic year to teach our students all the wonderful jumping tricks!
Notre Dame Dance Company: On Wednesdays, the ND Dance Company teaches our students dance, especially hip-hop and jazz, helping them to prepare to participate in the ND Dance Showcase.
CCI students enjoy a canoe ride during their field trip to the Center for History.
All primary school students are welcome to apply, but preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria:
